Private Instruction (Now Booking)

My studio or yours. The great thing about yours is that we can assess any problems you might be having with the software, the gear or the space itself. The great thing about mine is that you can get your hands on some great gear, nice monitoring and get a sense of what works for you and what doesn't (and why). We can cover anything and everything and I can help fill the gaps in your knowledge, ranging anywhere from audio basics to mixing to production.

DIY Recording Workshops (Now Booking for January 2025)

These courses are based on the material from the Uarts recording and production classes that I taught from 2014-2024, adapted to a home studio DIY workflow.

Emphasis on a solid foundation in the basics with a lot of attention to workflow, creativity, resourcefulness, and leveraging minimal tools to achieve that sound that's in your head.

Some things that we will cover:

How sound works. It’s kind of unbelievable how much more fun (and easy) everything gets once you know some of these basics.

Software- Whether you want to work with what you have or dive into something new, we can go over the pros and cons of what’s out there. I’m not qualified to go deep into the mechanics of everything, but once you understand some basic terminology and a wee bit about the fundamentals of digital audio, you’ll be able to teach yourself anything.

Having your room dialed in to the point where you can trust what you're hearing from the speakers. This requires a very basic understanding of how sound and acoustics work. If you're feeling adventurous, I'll show you how to make absorbers and diffusers.

A basic understanding of signal flow. The last thing you want is to contemplate self harm because you're trying to compose something in the computer and you can't get your headphones to work.

Then the fun stuff begins...  Building confidence and connecting what's in your head to what goes into the DAW (or tape).

Your ears! Fundamental frequencies vs odd and even harmonics. Proximity effect. Direct vs diffused sound.

Gain structure. How to avoid distortion and clipping vs what’s it going to sound like when you turn some stuff to 11.

The planes of space in a mix: top to bottom (frequency), left to right (panning), front to back (volume and spatial effects).

Characteristics of different mics, processors, instruments, etc. When to reach for one vs another.

How harmony, rhythm and arrangement affect your mix.

Perspective- zooming in vs zooming out.

To name a few…

The bottom line is ear training through experience.

Don't hesitate to book a 15 minute call. We can discuss your needs and see if we're a good fit.
